The Bjerke branch is located on Trondheimsveien near the Bjerke racetrack, and is easily accessible by bus (routes 31, 22 and 58). The branch´s local population numbers approximately 30,000, and the library services the districts of Nordre Aker and Grünerløkka in addition to Bjerke.
Bjerke is an established district with apartment complexes from the 1950´s, 60´s and 70´s mixed with both older and newer areas with small houses. The population is relatively stable, but the percent of immigrants – currently at approximately 28% - is on the rise.
The library’s goal is to be a meeting place, cultural centre and arena for learning in the local milieu. The library provides computers with Internet access, a quiet reading room, group room and work stations, as well as a separate section for magazines and newspapers.
The library has an active literature orientation program for 7 elementary/middle schools and has 2 high schools and a college dormitory in its immediate vicinity. Patrons can attend cultural events created in cooperation with local groups, such as the book cafe, philosophy cafe, a forum for local groups to present themselves and their subjects (”lokalbenk”) and exhibitions.
The Bjerke branch library is a local historical resource centre. In addition to its own Oslo collection, the library has access to the archives of the Groruddalen Historical Society, which include written material, maps, photographs and film. The photo database is available at www.deich.folkebibl.no/cgi-bin/websok-groruddalen.
The local historical project ”Is this where I belong?” can be viewed at www.erdether.no. The project´s site features film, sound, text and pictures that give a glimpse into the district´s development in the 1950´s.
