Deichmanske bibliotek / Oslo Public Library, Furuset Branch

The Furuset branch is located in the district of Alna, in Furuset Centre, and is accessible by underground (Ellingsrudbanen to Furuset) as well as by many bus routes (bus 79/Holmlia-Grorud, and 401/Oslo-Kjeller stops at the library).

The district of Alna is north east in Oslo, and is one of the city’s largest with its 43,200 inhabitants.  Large areas of the district were expanded in the 1970’s.  Most of the dwellings are apartment buildings, but there are also terraced houses and single family dwellings.

The district’s population is diverse.  Alna is a “young” district with many children.  Approximately 30% of the inhabitants have non-western immigrant background.  50% of the district’s children and youth have immigrant background.

The library have 225,000 visitors per year, and the annual circulation is 70,000.

The library aims to be a centre for culture, knowledge and information in the district, as well as to serve as a meeting place for the district’s inhabitants.

The library considers promoting reading to be one of its central functions.  There are 18 elementary and middle schools in the district, and school classes are regularly invited to the library.  Personnel also do outreach work in the schools, to present literature for children and youth.

The library offers children’s theatre and storytelling / readings for both young and old.  There are also theme evenings and literary evenings, which are often cooperative efforts with other organisations.
