The Gamle Oslo branch is located in Tøyen Centre, just to the east of the city center. The branch has a book collection of approximately 15,000 titles (per 30. Jan. 2013), and an area of 300 square meters.
The library is easily accessible by public transportation. All underground lines stop at Tøyen, as do bus numbers 20 and 60 (get off at Tøyen School or Sigurdsgate).
The district of Gamle Oslo has approximately 34,000 inhabitants, many of whom are between the ages of 20 – 40, as well as from 0 – 12. Approximately 36% have immigrant background, and most of these come from non-western countries. The library´s profile is influenced by the multi-national atmosphere in the district. The collection includes books in 12 languages. In addition to Norwegian, patrons can find literature in Arabic, English, French, Persian, Russian, Sami, Somalian, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese. The library also has several newspapers and magazines in various languages. The multi-cultural nature of the branch´s patron group make the library a natural meeting place, where integration and cultural diversity are key words. The library offers works of fiction, non-fiction, and Internet access for patrons with many needs and wishes, and is visited by groups of children and youth from schools and daycare centers in the district.
