Deichmanske bibliotek / Oslo Public Library, Grünerløkka Branch

The Grünerløkka branch is located at Schous Plass, in the center of the urban district of Grünerløkka near downtown Oslo.  It is easily accessible on foot, by the public bicycles available throughout the center of the city, by bus or by streetcar.  The building itself was erected in 1914, and is the first building in Norway specifically built to house a library.  The library is still an important cornerstone in this colorful, exciting district.

The Grünerløkka district is distinctive because of the influence of its young, urban population.  Of its over 27,000 inhabitants, 27% have an immigrant background, and 52% of the population is between the ages of 20 – 39 years.

The library has an extensive list of services:  children´s theater, story time for children and readings for adults, book cafe, exhibitions, various lectures, just to name a few.  The library cooperates closely with the district schools, and works actively via projects to stimulate reading for both young and old.  Two of the Oslo Public Library´s digital projects can be found in our branch – Bydagboka and Deichman´s Digital Workshop.

In addition to the adult and children´s sections, the branch also houses the Oslo Public Library´s special department dedicated to graphic novels/comic books – SERIETEKET.  This collection is a resource center for the library, as well as professional artists in the field in Norway.  Here, patrons can borrow comic books, meet the creators or attend a course in comic book art.  Serieteket is a meeting place for all interested in the genre, and often holds exhibitions of the work of Norwegian and foreign artists.
