The Majorstuen branch is the largest in the Oslo Public Library system. The library enjoys a central location in the lively junction of Majorstuen, on the west side of Oslo in the Frogner district. All west-bound underground lines stop at Majorstuen, as do many busses and street cars.
Frogner has a population of 45,000, and is Oslo’s largest district. In addition, the number of work places is approximately equal to the number of residents. Large educational institutions such as the University of Oslo – Blindern Campus and several colleges are within walking distance. One of the city’s most important shopping streets, Bogstadveien, is also nearby. These factors make the Majorstuen Branch a central library with patrons from the entire city.
The library has just under 300,000 visitors and just under 200,000 loans per year, and is open to the public every day, with the exception of the summer months. The spacious building with its 1,350 square meters is easily accessible from the street, and has several rooms dedicated to specific activities, including a reading room, a group room, study cells and a computer room where patrons have access to Internet and document editing tools. Local artists and amateurs are encouraged to exhibit their work in the library’s gallery. Patrons can also view historical film material that is otherwise not publicly available, via Kinoteket, the library’s digital cinema. The library participates in ”Eldreakademiet” (Senior Academy) in cooperation with the district’s Eldreråd (Council for Senior Citizens) and volunteering seniors. The Academy is open to everyone over the age of 60, regardless of district residency. During the winter and fall seasons, senior citizens give information on and help with Internet to their peer group on a volunteer basis, and there are also French classes. The Majorstuen Branch offers literature orientation sessions for more than 19 elementary and middle schools as well as 5 high schools in the district. The branch participates in various projects and cooperative efforts with the district, schools, institutions, clubs and private persons in order to provide a wide variety of services and happenings in the library.
