Deichmanske bibliotek / Oslo Public Library, Torshov Branch

The Torshov branch of the Oslo Public Library is situated a few miles north of  Oslo’s city centre, in the district of Sagene.

Sagene, which has approximately 30,000 inhabitants, was previously a working class area. Traditional industries have closed down and demographic changes have taken place. Now, Sagene is made up of a mixture of senior citizens with a blue-collar background, immigrants from Asia and Africa, students and youth, white-collar workers with higher education and a high proportion of social clients.

The library, which was Library of the Year in 1996, has adapted its services to this complex situation. High priority has been given to projects aiming at empowering the immigrant population, e.g. literary groups and Internet groups for young immigrant girls, and conversational groups for female immigrants. A senior citizen academy are also among its projects. For the last years, The Accessible Library, a project for making the library accessible to everyone, irrespective of physical and mental abilities, has dominated the strategy of the library.
