Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) var polakk, men tilbrakte barndommen i forvisning i Russland. Siden bodde han i Frankrike, før han til slutt slo seg ned i England. Han ble engelsk statsborger i 1886.

Joseph Conrad ble regnet som en av sin tids mest betydelige eventyrere, i likhet med Herman Melville og André Malraux var han en viktig oppdagelsesfarer. Conrad var sjømann i mange år (1874-1894) og skrev om livet på sjøen i mange av sine tekster.  Han krysset verdenshav og gjenga europeernes opplevelser av det mørke kontinent i romanform. Hans opphold i Afrika og inntrykkene derfra er svært tydelig i mange av verkene hans, ikke minst i hans mest kjente verk, Mørkets hjerte. I en rekke romaner utvikler Conrad sitt store tema om delaktighet, skyld og ansvar.

Han har skrevet mange mesterverk og disse kan lånes på biblioteket på mange språk.
